These floats can be used with solid carbide blades, carbide chip
blades
or with traditional steel rasp blades.
Uses of Basic Floats
The Lower-Offset, Long Float is used in a pushing motion to
remove points along the entire lower arcade. It is often bowed
slightly by the user to provide greater floating pressure using the
upper incisors for leverage. It can also be used to round-off the
second premolar.
The Upper/Lower, Straight- Long Float is used in a
pulling motion to remove points from both the upper and lower rear
molars without damaging the mucosa. It, too, is often bowed slightly
by the user to afford better leverage.
The Upper Obtuse, Short Float
is used to remove points on the forward upper molars, to shape the
second premolar and to remove small rostal hooks. It is also used
for finishing.
Harlton's Low Profile Floats
Harlton's Low Profile Floats are used to remove caudal hooks and for finishing upper and lower rear molars with a pull stroke. They include a Medium cutting pattern, specially-sized, solid tungsten carbide blade that can be resharpened or replaced. Additional blades and grit patterns available. We offer two versions; standard and pistol grip.
The standard rasp grip float is 21" long overall and offers a choice of handles - traditional hard maple or black neoprene for an additional $20.00.

The pistol grip float is 19" long overall and has a foam pistol grip handle.

Harlton's Floats For Smaller Horses

These Small Floats are scaled-down versions of our regular sized Standard Floats for use in the tight confines of the smaller mouths of young and miniature horses. The three available styles are: Lower Offset, Long (15-1/4"), Upper/Lower, Straight Long (15-1/4") and Upper/Obtuse Short (12-3/4").
These floats have a lower and narrower profile that is much easier and safer to use. They are as strong as our regular floats; just lighter and more compact. The handles are the same size but the shanks are proportionately shorter. They also have an integral, specially sized, solid tungsten carbide blade with a Medium cutting pattern which can be resharpened or replaced. A Fine blade for finishing is also available.

Blades for Harlton's Floats
Harlton's Premium Solid Carbide Float Blades

These blades are extremely sharp and can be resharpened four or more times. They are made from a solid piece of tungsten carbide that has had file teeth machined into and then been affixed to a stainless steel holder to reinforce it.
These USA made Standard, full size (3") blades are available in three patterns "M" (Medium), "C" (Coarse) and "XC" (Extra-Coarse). They fit the standard 3" x 1" blade holders with Allen Head set screws.
Also available are replacement blades for our Small and Low Profile Floats. They come complete with double-sided tape to attach them to the float. These blades have either the same Medium cutting pattern as our full-size blade or a Fine cutting pattern for finishing work. Like our full-sized blades they can be resharpened.
Blade Uses - The Fine blade is for finishing. The Medium blade, because it has less cutting depth, is easier to maneuver in the mouth. It works best in mouths that require only minimal maintenance. The Coarse blade is used for removing points, reducing waves and for flattening small hooks. It is best used in mouths that have had only minimal maintenance. The Extra-Coarse blade is for reducing waves and for use when a tooth is too difficult to cut. All patterns cut in only one direction. Therefore, like conventional rasps, they function best when used in a pushing motion.

Blades for "MS" Floats

The "MS" Floats feature a unique line of
disposable float blades. These blades have a thin backing plate and
fit the both the "MS" Floats and other traditional hand floats that
have thinker blades heads.
Other blade manufacturers make only one
style of blade and make it more or less aggressive by making the
teeth smaller or bigger to give the effect of course, medium or
fine. On these blades, however, the angle of the cut varies to make
the blade more or less aggressive. The result is a blade that cuts
predictably, cleanly and smoothly from the first use until the
last. These blades have solid stainless steel backing plates and
are disposable like the shorter Edge blades.
Four different cutting
patterns are offered, each in two blade lengths, 2" and 3-1/4". The
2" blades cost $65.00; The 3-1/4" cost $67.00.
Fine - Coded yellow,
the least aggressive blade pattern.
Medium - Coded green, a more
aggressive pattern than the fine blade.
Course - Coded red, more
aggressive pattern than the medium blade.
Extra Course – Coded blue,
the most aggressive blade pattern.
